the story . . .

Singer Songwriter Joey McGee performs both solo and with his band in and around the Little Big town of Bryan, Texas. A New Orleans native, his sound – Folk Rock Groove – is influenced by the Crescent City’s eclectic heritage of Gospel, Jazz, Blues and Rock.

“As a kid I wanted to be a heavy metal shredder and started playing guitar. The metal thing didn’t work out but I discovered a few things along the way: I could sing, my fingers weren’t all that fast, and Bob Dylan’s songs were much more accessible! That began my journey into singing, songwriting and Folk Rock Groove.”

“I have three albums under my belt: Alive & In The House, Love Is The Way and Fades To Sun. I’m currently working on my fourth - Terlingua Taproot - and I am finding my distinctive Americana voice in it as I revisit styles that were significantly influential in getting me into music - Gospel, Southern Rock, Folk and Country. It will be some of my best work to date.”

The Fine Art of Kindness: Life Lessons From My Mom

What is a major life-lesson you’ve learned from your mom? That question came to mind as I thought of my mom on this past Mother’s Day. She taught me many lessons, but I think the most significant is kindness
My mom was far from perfect. She battled many personal demons in her lifetime and often sought to deaden her pain with alcohol. Indeed, by the time I reached a legal drinking age, it wasn’t really a big deal for me: I’d been so immersed in party culture that it was old news.… Read more

2015 Rhythmic Shift of Reading and Being A Ladies' Man

Some of my thrifty book finds Around the middle of last year I fell into a musically creative slump. I was burned out and performing the same old material in the same venues. It got to a point where I honestly thought about laying down music – at least as a full time pursuit. I started working with a sound company and that proved to be a great respite: practically, I was still in the music biz, I did lots of physical labor (which was quite therapeutic), and I got paid to attend concerts!

As the year… Read more

Revelation and The Wisdom of Gollum

I woke up this morning with a revelation: I’m trying to be a perfectionist.
I got this understanding while mulling over thoughts to write in response to the Things My Momma Said blog post I shared over a month ago. My intent was to write on a weekly basis, addressing the five ideas I touched upon in that post. But I was trying to be a perfectionist and, hence, I got nothing!
Perfectionism is a subtle mask worn by a clever and stealthy foe and the name of that foe is fear.
Don’t let… Read more
